Maree Clarke

Maree Clarke’s inventive jewellery collection, Thung-ung Coorang, combines customary organic materials with 3D printed forms modelled from kangaroo teeth, echidna quills and crow feathers. In 2013 Clarke produced the largest kangaroo teeth necklace in Australia. Inspired by nineteenth-century photographs of Koori men and women wearing kangaroo teeth necklaces, Clarke painstakingly reclaimed now obsolete customary processes and produced a cultural object of adornment. In this new collection, Clarke takes further this practice, creating contemporary wearable neckpieces that speak about place, culture and history. Each neckpiece has been designed to reflect the relationship between modernity and the past.

Clarke is connected to the traditional lands of the Mutti Mutti, Wamba Wamba, Yorta Yorta and Boon Wurrung peoples of Victoria.
