On the occasion of the 2017 exhibition The House of Dior: Seventy Years of Haute Couture, the National Gallery of Victoria presents a Limited Edition art book with accompanying silkscreen print, Constellation, an evening gown created by Maria Grazia Chiuri for Christian Dior haute couture spring-summer 2017 collection.

Processed, proofed and printed by Negative Press in Melbourne, the print is embossed with the official stamp of the House of Dior.

The Book:
In celebration of the seventieth anniversary and produced in close collaboration with the House of Dior, one of the world’s most prestigious couture houses, this sumptuous publication features garments designed by Christian Dior Couture between 1947 and 2017 and more than 100 stunning images.

The House of Dior explores the story of the fashion house through a series of themes, featuring works by the seven designers who have played key roles in shaping Dior’s renowned fashionable silhouette: Christian Dior, Yves Saint Laurent, Marc Bohan, Gianfranco Ferré, John Galliano, Raf Simons and Maria Grazia Chiuri.
This large-format hardback details the full retrospective of the House of Dior from 1947 until today; is striking in design, innovative in production values, and is visually led with fullpage photography of works, historical and contextual imagery.

The Print:
Constellation, an evening gown created by Maria Grazia Chiuri for Christian Dior haute couture spring-summer 2017 collection, is a silkscreen print processed, proofed and printed by Negative Press in Melbourne, the print is embossed with the official stamp of the House of Dior.

About the artwork

Maria Grazia Chiuri made her couture debut for Dior in January 2017. The spring–summer collection acknowledged well-established house codes as well as taking inspiration from Dior himself. Here, bold handpainted and embroidered astrological motifs reference Dior’s love of astrology and his superstitious nature, while the combination of soft velvet and crisp taffeta fabrics evoke the youthful and romantic aesthetic that Chiuri’s evening wear is known for.

In July 2016 Maria Grazia Chiuri became the seventh designer and first female creative director at Dior, presenting her first couture collection for the house in January 2017. Coinciding with the seventieth anniversary of the house, the presentation at Musée Rodin combined established house codes, such as the New Look, the flower and astrology, with a spirit of romantic youthfulness that was unapologetically feminine. Notions of the cosmopolitan and universal woman figure largely in her design philosophy at Dior. Chiuri’s clothes are not only beautiful but also functional, and her collections, strike a careful balance between tailored suiting and highly decorated evening wear.
