The NGV has collaborated with artist Atong Atem to produce a limited-edition silk scarf featuring the work Adut (2015) exclusive to the NGV design store.

Atong Atem is a Melbourne-based artist who uses photography and video to explore migrant stories and post-colonial practices in the African diaspora.

Each edition contains a signed and numbered certificate of authentication by the artist.

About the artwork

Ethiopian-born and Australian-based artist Atong Atem uses photography to examine historical colonial practices and the African diaspora.

Atem has an ongoing interest in portraiture as a vehicle to explore migrant stories and post-colonial culture and identity, as seen in this work capturing her friend, Adut. Her work not only explores the various experiences and identity of herself and her friends, but also draws on the history of studio photography in Africa.

‘The Studio series… has developed into an exploration of my blackness and my identity and culture through African cultural iconography, black visual languages, and diasporic traditions represented in the act of posing for a photograph. The photos are traditional, staged studio photographs similar to those found in my family albums and the photo albums of many people in the diaspora – they’re bright, colourful and depict a very precarious moment in African history between traditionalism and cultural changes brought on by colonialism… This Studio series responds to the ethnographic gaze of colonial photographs of black people and speaks to the importance of creating and owning one’s own narrative and depictions.’
