About the artwork

‘I moved to Lagos and it is here that I discovered my language to be photography. Bits of the city reminded me of my home in Aba, Abia State, a south-eastern region of Nigeria. Being consistently homesick and nostalgic, I started taking pictures with my phone of places and faces I found familiar. Everything grew from there.’

Yagazie Emezi is a Nigerian artist and self-taught photojournalist focused on stories surrounding African women and their health, sexuality, education and human rights. Having worked extensively across Africa, Emezi also covers stories on identity and culture, social justice, climate change and migration. Her art practice uses photography and sculpture to construct visual critiques of Nigeria’s socio-political state and the roles media play in it, pulling from history and current events. Emezi’s work has been widely published and exhibited and in 2023 she was included in the prestigious New Photography exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art, New York.

Megacities is an ambitious project bringing the creative vision of ten leading street photographers into dialogue with the urban environment of ten global megacities – cities with a population of more than 10 million people.

With origins in the 1930s, and the advent of 35-millimetre film and handheld cameras, street photography came into its own as photographers became able to move freely and unobtrusively while taking photographs. The result was a dynamic genre of photography centred on the built environment and the behaviour, activity and experiences of urban populations. Street photography extends the descriptive and didactic capacities of photography to the realm of creative, interactive engagement and reflection, and in this project, offers a contemporary account of how we live.

The work of the ten photographers will feature in a dynamic, immersive environment, presenting a thought-provoking vision of the twenty-first century urban phenomenon – the megacity.
