For the NGV Triennial, NGV has loaned one of three editions of Maurizio Cattelan’s Comedian, 2019. A viral phenomenon, the work is an instruction piece, requiring gallery staff to replace the real banana affixed to the gallery wall every seven to ten days. Comedian provoked much debate and discussion when it was premiered at Art Basel Miami, part of a performance-artist’s prank and a court case.
