In the winter issue of NGV Magazine we climb to the peaks of Tasmania’s Mt Field National Park with artist Fiona Hall. Photographed for the cover by Peter Whyte, and interviewed by Kate Ryan, Hall speaks about her concerns for the natural world and creating a forested environment for young children and teenagers in her latest exhibition for NGV, Uneasy Seasons.

Japanese artist Katsushika Hokusai was also deeply committed to capturing the natural world, and, as Mem Capp discovers in her essay on perhaps his most recognised images - The great wave off Kanagawa - the appeal of his work continues generations later.

The July-August issue also sees features from New York and Beijing on contemporary artists Jim Dine and Xu Zhen. In his essay, Six Things You Should Know About Xu Zhen, Philip Tinari describes the NGV Triennial artist as experimental and a little ironic, and the Chinese art scene as one that has radically transformed; while Petra Kayser speaks with printmaker and colour king Jim Dine for her essay on his work, now on display at NGV.

Also in this issue, ‘Digital Champion of Finland’ Linda Liukas on life skills for young people through computer coding and creative logic; a Nullabor journey recalled with the late Japanese-Australian artist Akio Makigawa; an inspiring Women in Design feature with Hub Furniture Director Jacqueline Foti-Lowe; and Melbourne artists write about the works that inspire them.

Art. Ideas. Design. Creativity. With new writing, interviews, photography and features, NGV Magazine is about the people and stories behind great art and design. NGV Magazine celebrates creativity of all kinds through dynamic, international editorial and a focus on unique and engaging content.
