Phebe Parisia’s latest collection 15th Algorithm references historical and contemporary research into one of the oldest mathematic challenges, geometric tessellation.
The most recent discovery after a gap of 50 years is the 15th monohedral tiling convex pentagon - the shape and tessellation that has been referenced for this collection. After long term research, this pentagon was discovered using a computer algorithm developed by mathematicians Casey Mann, Jennifer McLoud-Mann and David Von Derau.
Acknowledging historical and contemporary mathematical research, this collection uses a combination of technological processes such as laser assisted fabrication combined with Parisia’s signature technique of hand etching and colouring. The pieces respectively are named after the mathematicians who discovered this pentagon.
Designed and made in Melbourne exclusively for the NGV design store.
