Visions of Paradise: Indian Court Paintings

Artists of the Rajput and Mughal courts produced some of the most richly decorated and exquisitely detailed paintings in the history of art. These visually complex and sophisticated scenes have become an internationally celebrated part of India’s culture and visual identity.

Visions of Paradise presents the National Gallery of Victoria’s collection of Indian court paintings, including its internationally important holdings of Rajput paintings, and opens up the world of opulent palaces, sumptuous lifestyles and cultural activities of the famed maharanas and maharajas of Rajasthan.

This publication features major essays from experts around the globe, including Wayne Crothers, Senior Curator, Asian Art, NGV; Dipti Khera, Assistant Professor, South Asian Art, in the Department of Art History and Institute of Fine Arts, New York University; Dr Shailka Mishra, Postdoctoral Fellow at the Forum Transregionale Studien, Berlin; and award-winning author and playwright, Suneeta Peres da Costa.
