About the artwork

Ma Roulotte, the house Bonnard acquired in Vernonnet, Normandy, in 1912, was relatively modest, with a distinctive balcony of diagonally arranged lattices that inspired several painting compositions over the ensuing years and into the 1920s. It is also the point of origin for several landscapes that reveal glimpses of the Seine River. Here, a table laid for tea provides visual interest in the foreground, and draws the eye to the middle ground where a dog lies snoozing. Beyond this, a meandering river is glimpsed through lush riparian vegetation, a thick band of green, yellow, blue and purple hues.
