In 2015, philanthropist Krystyna Campbell- Pretty gifted 130 works of French haute couture to the NGV in honour of her late husband, Harold Campbell-Pretty, a passionate supporter and lover of fashion. This donation inspired in Campbell-Pretty a passion for collecting and supporting the Fashion and Textiles department at the NGV.
This volume features works from the NGV Collection gifted by Krystyna Campbell- Pretty, as well as archival material also donated by Campbell-Pretty, including fashion designs and workbooks, and rare fashion magazines. These materials form the basis of a new specialist fashion research library created for the NGV: the Krystyna Campbell-Pretty Fashion Research Collection.
The magnificent illustrations in the book are supported by written contributions from a range of fashion specialists: Olivier Gabet, Director of the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris; Françoise Tétart-Vittu, an expert in eighteenth and nineteenth–century costume, curator and writer; and Paola Di Trocchio and Danielle Whitfield, Curators, Fashion and Textiles at the NGV. Edwina McCann, Editorial Director of
Vogue Australia, Vogue Living and GQ, provides the preface.
