Description

This winter issue features discussions on the NGV’s past and future.

Especially for NGV Magazine, NGV Director Tony Ellwood AM speaks to a range of people about their memories and experiences of the NGV and looks ahead to a future that now includes the addition of a new gallery, NGV Contemporary. Author Phip Murray looks back on fifty years of NGV International, including the vision of architect Roy Grounds and the community’s changing opinion of the 1968 building. NGV curator Beckett Rozentals and writer and Director of Griffith University Art Museum, Angela Goddard, write about the exhibition and artists who were instrumental in launching a new era for the NGV via the St Kilda Road building, with essays on the original The Field and its youngest artist, Robert Hunter.

August also heralds fifty years of the NGV Voluntary Guides program and we meet some of the NGV’s guides, who talk about their favourite moments and art works from the NGV Collection.

Issue #11 also explores the stories behind recent additions to the Collection, including the inspiring life and work of Art Nouveau artist Clara Driscoll and her work for Tiffany Studio, Wisteria Lamp c. 1903–5, and a gold drinking flask created by Melbourne jeweller H. Newman & Sons, with a fascinating backstory.
